Public Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Scheduled for Wednesday, October 23rd
DALTON & HINSDALE, Massachusetts—Berkshire Natural Resources Council (BNRC), a nationally accredited land trust serving Berkshire County, will celebrate recently completed renovations at Old Mill Trail with a public ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, October 23, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. The event will be held at the trail’s newly upgraded parking lot and accessible entry point, located along Route 8 in Hinsdale. The rain date is set for Thursday, October 24, at the same time and location.
BNRC has transformed the parking lot and sections of the trail to meet Forest Service Trail Accessibility Guidelines, ensuring that wheelchairs, strollers, and other mobility devices can now easily access the scenic 1.4 miles of Old Mill Trails. These improvements are part of BNRC’s ongoing efforts to make outdoor recreation more inclusive and welcoming for all.
The public is invited to attend the ribbon-cutting event, which will feature a variety of activities for all ages. Highlights include a guided hike along the accessible portion of the trail and a kids’ activity that encourages young participants to connect with the outdoors. Light refreshments will be provided throughout the celebration.
The event will also include remarks from BNRC President Jenny Hansell on the importance of accessible green spaces in the Berkshires.
“Nature should be available to everyone, and projects like this are about removing barriers and creating new opportunities to explore the Berkshires’ diverse landscapes. Old Mill Trail, one of BNRC’s most magical and beautiful trails, is now more accessible, welcoming, and ready for all to enjoy”, says Jenny Hansell, President of BNRC.
The 127-acre Old Mill Trail land parcel offers walking access to the East Branch of the Housatonic River. Initially conserved by Crane & Company and MassWildlife, the property was acquired by BNRC in 2016. With the help of a MassTrails grant, recent improvements include resurfacing sections of the trails with compacted, crushed stone, expanding the platform at the trail’s terminus, and upgrading the bridge decking. These enhancements ensure that the trail remains accessible for years to come.
“This project was made possible thanks to the incredible generosity and valuable input of our donors and partners. Every contribution and partnership help us move closer to a future where everyone can enjoy the outdoors. The enhancements at Old Mill Trail are a perfect example of how community support and strategic investment create lasting impact for public access”, says Kathleen Smolinski, BNRC’s Interim Director of Development.
This trail is not only a popular destination for fishing, birdwatching, and enjoying wildflowers, but also carries rich historical significance. Visitors can learn about the trail’s past through a series of numbered signposts, which detail important moments in the property’s history. These can be explored through a brochure or on BNRC’s website.
The event is free, and all are welcome to explore the trail and celebrate this milestone in outdoor accessibility.
