The 645-acre Boulders property was a private retreat for the Crane family, acquired in the early 19th century to protect a water supply important to paper making. The house the Cranes built has been demolished. Several of the trails on the property are based on former carriage drives. In 2015 Crane and Co. donated the property to the Berkshire Natural Resources Council.
The property is diverse, ranging from wet lowlands to dry, high forests. Most visitors would like to check out the eponymous stone at the high point of the property. The best time to take in a view from them is coming up, as the leaves begin to change and fall. Here is a 4-mile hike to the boulders at The Boulders.
